Bringing clubs together in Wales for a fun summer session

As we head towards the end of the summer, two of our clubs got together for a special join Sporting Memories session at Penarth Rugby and Athletics Club.

Our Penarth club (based in the Vale of Glamorgan) and our Rumney Hub club based in Cardiff were part of the session held on Wednesday 23 August with over 30 members from across both clubs in attendance.

The session kicked off indoors with Jane Clemence, who leads the Rumney Hub club, sharing details of her successful career in sport during the 1990s. Jane was a Welsh international footballer, having been capped by Cymru 17 times and scoring 11 goals. The club members were enthralled by Jane’s insights into her sporting career, which also included appearances at a national level in the Welsh netball and baseball teams too! Jane was also joined at the session by her fellow Rumney Hub volunteers Phil Jenkins and Martyn Thomas to support their club members who had made the trip to Penarth.

The next part of the joint saw session saw a highly competitive sports quiz held led by our brilliant volunteer Paul Sawyer, who supports the Penarth club alongside fellow volunteer Peter Owen, being quizmaster for the session and for keeping the spirit high between the teams despite the desire to win!

Finally, to wrap up an enjoyable day had by all the club members and volunteers headed to Penarth Pier for some time by the beach and to also partake in some Fish and Chips for lunch!

Reflecting on the joint session, Rob Baker, Project Coordinator for Wales, said: “It’s always great when we have the opportunity to bring clubs together from across Wales and this session in Penarth was no different.”

“Despite the quiz bringing out the competitiveness in the club members, it was fantastic to see such a warm and welcoming atmosphere shared between the Penarth and Rumney Hub members.

“I’d also like to thank Paul and Peter, as well as Jane, Phil and Martyn for making the day possible as a lot of effort goes into making these sessions entertaining for the members.”
