Bringing communities together through special event in Glasgow

Sporting Memories Scotland teamed up with Age Scotland to host a special event in Glasgow with members from diverse communities across the city for a morning of conversations and inclusive activities.
Over 90 people from across the Asian, Chinese, African and Caribbean communities joined our staff and volunteers from Sporting Memories and Age Scotland for the ‘Together in Sport’ event on a fun and engaging morning at Maryhill Community Central Hall.
It was a chance for those in attendance to find out more about what a Sporting Memories session looks like at our Clubs and for us to discover how we can enhance our work to support diverse groups.
Getting to know Sporting Memories
It was a busy morning with an array of activities on offer for everyone to sample during their time at Maryhill.
One of the activities on offer to attendees was Boccia, where with the help of the Sporting Memories Scotland team and volunteers everyone had a chance to play, regardless of ability and mobility, from their chairs and see if they could get their ball nearest to the jack.
With the Commonwealth Games taking place in the city later this year, there was also the chance for attendees to take part in a specially designed activity where they learned more about the Games and the potential athletes that will be competing for Scotland in the summer.
And it wouldn’t be a Sporting Memories session without a sporting quiz for everyone to test their knowledge with, as well as taking a chance to take a guess where the ball might be on the ‘Spot the ball’ board.

Developing future plans on an enjoyable day
Once the Sporting Memories activities came to a close, the Age Scotland team then delivered their Body Boosting Bingo session before there was time for our team to gather feedback from attendees about what they liked and would like to participate in the future.
It was an enjoyable day for everyone in attendance with plenty of conversations and laughter had through the range of activities, and Brian Sloan, Development Director at Sporting Memories Scotland, reflected on a positive day at Maryhill.
“It’s a big thank you to Age Scotland for organising the ‘Together in Sport’ and for bringing so many people from across Glasgow to join us.
“We were overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and joy from all the participants. The broadness of the ethnic communities represented was very heartening with older people group representatives from the Asian, Chinese, African and Caribbean communities.
“They all shared a love for physical exercise and enthusiastically participated in the activities. We also received a lot of valuable feedback which we hope can be used to develop our engagement with diverse communities in the future.”
