Film launched celebrating Essex-based apprentices

We’re delighted to launch our short film reflecting on the journey of three Essex-based apprentices as they supported Sporting Memories Clubs and sessions across the county.
Produced by Ally Thornton, this short film captures the thoughts of Kelly Nicholls, Nick Greenslade and Tyra Perry, who all undertook their year-long apprenticeship by delivering Sporting Memories activities at our Clubs and several health and social care settings across Braintree, Canvey Island, Chelmsford and South Benfleet.
The project was supported thanks to the likes of Coach Core Foundation, Freedom Leisure, Sport for Confidence and Essex County Council with funding for the project provided by Sport England’s Pilot Fund.
With the aim of creating a workforce development pathway for the apprentices across the county as well as learning more about the role of sport and physical activity in local communities, it has been a memorable journey for Kelly, Nick and Tyra as they explain in the film below.
Following on from the apprenticeship
With the project now coming to an end, we reflected on the experiences of all three of our Essex-based apprentices.
Kelly
Kelly spoke of her enjoyment being part of the apprenticeship and delivering to older people across the Sporting Memories sessions. Kelly also was able to continue her professional development during the apprentice, which included successfully completing a Love To Move course from British Gymnastics, enabling her to deliver age and dementia-friendly seated exercise programmes designed specifically for older adults.
Kelly has since gone on to secure a new permanent job.
Nick
Nick has been highly commended for his work ethic and engaging approach with older people during his apprenticeship, with him being recognised for his efforts at the Coach Core Foundation Awards earlier this year by winning the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ (Growth category) accolade.
Nick’s efforts have been further rewarded by earning a full-time position with Freedom Leisure, which will see him continue to deliver Sporting Memories sessions at Witham as well as launch new sessions in Braintree and Halstead.
Tyra
Tyra spoke of how the apprenticeship has helped to build her personal confidence and overcome challenges she faced with being anxious. Through her sessions in Chelmsford, Tyra also developed her communication skills enabling her to connect with older people and engage them with the reminiscence and inclusive physical activities she delivered.
Tyra particularly enjoyed working in care homes and is looking to progress her career in the sector as an activity coordinator.
We would like to thank Kelly, Nick and Tyra for all of their efforts during their apprenticeships and wish them all the very best for the future!
