Engaging locally through sporting activities

It’s been a busy period for our Sandhurst Sporting Memories Club as they’ve been undertaking a series of activities which have combined sport with community engagement!

Over the summer the Club have engaged with locally based charity Younger People with Dementia (YPWD) and Bracknell Library to host two sessions focusing on reminiscence and inclusive physical activities.

Working alongside with YPWD in Reading

In late June, our Sandhurst Club members and volunteers were invited by YPWD to host a Sporting Memories session at the Indian Community Centre in Reading.

Over 20 people from the local community, who are connected to YPWD, braved the bad weather to participate in the meeting and it was a session which was positively received by those who made the journey.

During the session, there was a wide range of discussions about a range of sport, but it was clear that cricket was one of the main passions of the group, with others sharing their enjoyment of hockey and racket sports.

There was also time for the usual Sporting Memories activities – including a quiz and a Spot The Ball competition. This was followed by an intense game of Boccia, with three teams competing for the group championship. However, it was the singles competition that was intensely fought over by the YPWD members.

The session was warmly received by everyone in attendance and there is a hope that our Sandhurst Club and the YPWD members can reconnect in the future for another event.

Sharing memories of 1966 at Bracknell Library

On Thursday 30 July, our Sandhurst Club will be making their next journey, this time to Bracknell Library, to host a special event focusing on England winning the football World Cup in 1966.

Taking place between 2pm to 4pm at the Library, the Sandhurst Club will be leading a session that will offer attendees the chance to take part in a session that will celebrate the success of the Three Lions 60 years on.

The session will involve activities including a quiz, a chance to place to play boccia and an opportunity for to meet new people from the local area whilst enjoying teas, coffees and biscuits.
