Gone Fishing! Marden enjoy trip to Monk Lakes

Our Marden Club enjoy activities away from their usual sessions and thanks to funding from Marden Community Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), they were able to take in a trip to Monk Lakes to enjoy some fishing.

With the support from the ‘Cast a Thought’ charity, our Marden Club members were able to experience an opportunity to learn more about fishing as well as testing their skills on the lake.

On a glorious afternoon in Kent, the Marden group made their way to the lakes, where they were divided into two smaller groups where they were given instructions on fishing, including how to set up their rods and the all-important bait to lure the fish towards them.

After some initial hesitancy from some of the members they got stuck into the challenge of trying to bring up some fish from the waters. The Marden members were relatively successful with their attempts, with excitement growing as the session went on with many catching a range of small fish. One member who deserved a special mention was Eileen, who caught two of the biggest fish of the day!

Alongside the fishing, there was the opportunity for members to chat and enjoy the sunshine. Michael, one of the Club members and aged 92 years young, brought along his fly-fishing memorabilia to show the group. This included a box of intricate flies he had made as a younger man, which provoked memories for some other in the group who used to do fly fishing in the past too. There was also the opportunity to enjoy refreshments at the lake thanks to Helen at ‘Cast a Thought’.

It was a wonderful day, with Sue Eltringham, Club facilitator at Marden, reflecting on the visit to Monk Lakes: “The sun shone, and the day was a huge success with everyone in the group showing their gratefulness for the experience.

“Some in the group had not fished for over 65 years so it brought back some memories from their youth. It was such a joy to be able to offer some of Mardens older residents an opportunity to take part in an activity from their younger days; it brought such happiness and reward to all who took part.

“A big thank you to ‘Cast A Thought’ for their time with our members and Marden Community Incorporated Organisation for funding the trip.”
