Remembering Andy Currie

Remembering Andy

Andy Currie – what can we say? A true legend, a keen sportsman, a passionate Scot, a shining example of perseverance, a whole heap of fun and giggles, kind supporter to those who needed it, anytime and anywhere…and that’s just his Sporting Memories life.

Sadly, Andy passed away earlier this month after a life filled with all the above and much, much more. There will be many words and stories to be told about Andy over the next weeks and months as his family and friends gather for a last farewell, but today everyone at the Sporting Memories family want to say “Thank you. It’s been an honour to have you on our team.”

A decade of supporting Sporting Memories

Andy had been a volunteer for over 10 years and he can be seen below receiving his 10-year service pin and certificate last year at the annual Scottish Volunteers Celebration event. Sporting Memories first crossed paths with Andy when he was volunteering at the Harry Heaney Day Centre in Rutherglen. His infectious nature and dedication to helping people meant he was soon scooped up into the Sporting Memories Clan.

With his love of sports of all types it wasn’t long till he became our champion of chair and ability-based exercises that got everyone moving. He was a regular at the clubs at Westwood and Calderwood in East Kilbride. The standing relay was a great favourite but we make no mention of where he might have got the baton he often brought along. (OK it might have once been seen at a Commonwealth Games where Andy was a field official – but that’s just a rumour – or not!)

If you click this link you can see Andy in action although that day the members were using a wooden spoon as a baton.

Going above and beyond

Covid didn’t stop Andy from his regular contributions to Sporting Memories. He was pretty much game for anything and this video he recorded for the “Sporting Memories in 100 objects” was excellent and so typical of his generous spirit. He loved a day out with the club members and despite being a lifelong Rangers fan, a trip to the ‘opposition’ at Celtic Park wasn’t a hardship as this photo show.

Andy kept on going despite losing his own mobility and the last time he managed to join a meeting was when Chic Young came to our Blantyre club earlier this year. Despite being very frail, he was there laughing as loudly as anyone else over a night of football hilarity.

Andy, we will miss you but are so thankful that you dedicated so much of your life to Sporting Memories.

Thank you so much for this fantastic tribute to my Dad. He loved his time at Sporting Memories. It gave him out of the house on his own terms, spending time with lovely people and helping others, in cheery defiance of his own health problems. He always enjoyed his trips out with the groups and enjoyed his cuppa and morning rolls!

Andy was my father in law. You couldn't meet a better guy. He loved going to sporting memories, especially doing his keep fit with the group. I'll miss his wee cheery face.
