Share your memorable players for our World Cup XI!

We’re inviting all football fans to share their favourite memories and players from World Cups gone, as we build the Sporting Memories World Cup XI!

With the tournament starting this week, we’re asking you to share the names of players that would make your most memorable eleven from World Cups gone by.

Be it World Cup winning captains, Golden Boot winners, or even those who have had an infamous moment at the tournament which sticks in your mind, we want you to share who would make your most memorable players.

You don’t even have to pick a formation or players in a position – just share with us those players that stand out in your mind!

We’ll then collate the most popular players who will make it into our Sporting Memories World Cup XI!

How to share your memorable World Cup players!

There are two ways in which you can share your XI with us:

  • Fill out the form on this site where you can list as many players as you like and the reason why you’ve chosen those players. Enter your XI Here
  • Email contact@sportingmemories.uk – with the names of your players and the reason why you’ve chosen them as your memorable World Cup stars.
  • Or leave a comment at the bottom of this page!

The deadline for entries is 15th July.

Following on from that date we will collate all entries and those players with the most votes will make our Sporting Memories World Cup XI, which will be revealed before the World Cup final!

I agree the 1970 Brazil World Cup Team in Mexico is probably the best, and that tournament was the best ever.
In the 1966 World Cup Portugal played the best football, as did Holland in 1974 with their total football.
As a Scotsman, I always admired Bobby Moore who had two good World Cups, and the same goes for Franz Beckenbauer.
Probably the best match I can remember was between North Korea and Portugal at Goodison Park, (Everton's old ground,) at the 1966 Wrold Cup. Portugal won by 5 goals to three after being three goals down in the first half. Eusabio scored four goals in the second half to win the game. North Korea also beat Italy in that tournament.
In my opinion, Pele is the best player to have played in the World Cup, (he won it three times, and was their star man.) Others running him close were Johan Cruyff of Holland, Eusebio of Portugal, and Maradona of Argentina.
As for goalkeepers, Lev Yashin of Russia, Gordon Banks of England, and Walter Senga of Italy, were probably the best.
And in closing, I don't think you can compare players from yesteryear with the present day stars.

Agree about 1970 Brazil team.
But you'd have to find space for Messi,Zidane,Pirlo and so many others!
Bobby Moore anyone?
Beckenbauer,Cruyff ,Eusebio?
I'll try to compose a team later.

I was at the World Cup in West Germany in 1974.
My first time abroad at age 21 ?
I was fortunate enough to attend all 3 of Scotland's games
I was absolutely blown away by the up and down overlapping skills of Sandy Jardine and Danny McGrain . Both were right Backs with Rangers and Celtic respectively.
Danny was played at left back by Willie Ormond and looked a natural ?

There was no doubt in my mind about world cup memories for me the Brazil team from 1970 was easily the best international team ever to play football with the one and only Pele leading them,He was for me the best player in the best team ever to play in the world cup. We all have magic moments in it david nareys toepokè v Brazil is one of mine?
