Sporting Memories East Lothian Clubs Hit the Away Days!

Who doesn’t like a good road trip, especially when there are some golden sporting memories at the destination? Three of our clubs from East Lothian were certainly on the move this May.
Blood doesn’t show on a maroon jersey
The first stop on the away days adventures were for our Haddington Club as they visited Tynecastle, the home of Heart of Midlothian (better known as Hearts!)
Members from the Haddington group making the trip to Edinburgh included three chaps from Haddington Care Home. Our guide for the day was a superfan called David Allan - in a loud yellow & green shirt in the picture. He is the Hearts Museum and Collections Manager who apparently always wears loud shirts. David challenges people to ask him ANYTHING about Hearts FC and, as he has all the answers to hand, is known as Mr Hearts. Can you spot David below?

Along with the visit to the museum, the group spent time at the Hearts Memorial Garden. This garden contains a wonderful memorial to the McCrae’s Battalion. The link is worth a read. The group also had a peek into the dressing rooms & then onto pitchside through the tunnel.
Howay the Lads
Our groups from Dunbar and North Berwick headed south down the A1 to visit St James’ Park, the home of Newcastle United.

Thirty members from across both Clubs enjoyed a detailed tour of one of the biggest stadiums in Britain where they enjoyed the panoramic views of the stadium, luxurious hospitality boxes, pitch side access. This was followed by an interesting comparison when viewing the state-of-the-art home changing rooms and then the more functional visitors’ facilities! The tour finished with photo opportunities in the media area before retiring to Shearer’s Bar, named after the legendary Geordie striker.
The group also took a few moments to remember Iby Robertson, who passed away recently and would have loved this day out. Iby had been at the heart Dunbar Sporting Memories for many years, and his presence was missed by all who went on the visit to Newcastle.
For the trip to Newcastle big thanks must go to Community Windpower, North Berwick Trust and Dunbar Walking Football who are supporters of the work Sporting Memories delivers within the community.
