Sporting Memories supporting BBC Memories and Dementia Season

Sporting Memories is pleased to be supporting the BBC’s ‘Memories and Dementia: Starting the Conversation season’, taking place across its television, digital and radio platforms.

The public broadcaster has launched a special season of programming that will raise awareness of those living with dementia, the impact the condition can have on them and their friends, families and carers,

The season will also show how through their vast archive of programming and content, they can hopefully evoke memories for individuals living with dementia and help to stimulate conversation and activities.

In the build-up to the season, the BBC connected with Sporting Memories to explore how our Clubs and reminiscence resources can engage those living with dementia through the power of sport.

Over the course of the season, Sporting Memories will be appearing across BBC television and radio – so keep your eyes and ears tuned to find out more about our work!

Memories and Dementia season

The BBC’s Ambassador for the Memories and Dementia season, Doctor and television personality Punam Krishan, reflected on why the it’s important to use reminiscence to help those living with dementia.

“Dementia can be a challenging condition to live with. I see patients with dementia in my practice – and know the strain the condition can place on people – as well as on their family and friends. One thing that can really help is reminiscence – using media like TV, pictures, or music, that captures history, or follows a familiar place, or interest, something that evokes memories which can help start a conversation with loved ones and carers.”

Chris Wilkins, our Co-Founder and CEO echoed the thoughts of Dr Punam, and how Sporting Memories can provide a welcoming place for those living with dementia.

“Sporting Memories has always provided inclusive sessions for those living with dementia, and their loved ones, in an attempt to stimulate memories and conversations which can hopefully improve their mental wellbeing.

“We’re pleased to be supporting this important season from the BBC, which will show how reminiscence resources, such as films, images and audio, can play a vital role in reconnecting those living with dementia to their loved ones and communities.”
