Time to Care for our volunteers thanks to Sky

Is there a more pleasant way to spend an afternoon than on a smooth carpet of manicured grass in glorious sunshine with a scrumptious tea to follow?  Volunteers from our Fife and West Lothian clubs would definitely agree.  Thanks to the Sky Cares programme, we were able to thank our volunteers for another years’ dedicated work with some activities.

Choosing an afternoon of Bowls

Both Fife and West Lothian suggested a day of lawn bowls and were lucky enough to have Duffus Park Club in Cupar and Linlithgow Bowling Club offer their facilities for the sessions as well as some of their members giving up time to coach and assist those needing extra support.  Very generous of all those club members and who knows, maybe get some new recruits for the sport into the bargain.

West Lothian Volunteers

At both sessions, volunteers from different clubs mixed to make teams which was lovely – a good chance to mix and mingle and get competitive!  Oh yes, there can never be a sporting event with our groups where it doesn’t get serious despite the laughter.  A perfect example can be seen here at Cupar when the measuring tape was brought out to determine that winning bowl.

All players were able to enjoy some lovely food afterwards before settling down to their devilishly difficult quizzes and crosswords.  Linlithgow volunteer Peter had one of his infamous crosswords ready to spring on the unsuspecting participants with possibly Broxburn A team winning.... all in good fun.

Reflecting on a fun day out

Our volunteers enjoyed their time on the lawns with feedback for the day being overwhelmingly positive. Below are some of the comments left by our volunteers in attendance:

  • Rona, Cupar - ”I thoroughly enjoy meeting the people.”

  • Jen & Dave, Livingston - ”Thank you so much for inviting us, we had a brilliant day. Looking forward to next year already!”

  • Grace, Livingston - ”I’m having a great time with everyone. I love my Monday club so much so to have the chance to come here and meet other clubs is great. And I enjoyed playing bowls again, I got better towards the end!”

  • Janet, Dunfermline - ”Fab day and great to see everybody laughing and mixing.  The food afterwards was super too”

  • Mark, Kirkcaldy - ”Just meeting and making connections with people is great”

  • Ian, Broxburn - ”It was great to come out, meet others and enjoy playing bowls. Thanks for making it happen and I look forward to the next one and doing the quiz.

The afternoons were enjoyed so much that there is already talk of some more bowls outings for our volunteers and perhaps an inter-regional competition.
