Visting the Home of Cricket

Our Sudbury and Croydon Clubs were given the chance to take a look around the home of cricket as members and volunteers from both groups visited Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Thanks to the kindness of MCC Community, the Clubs were given the unique opportunity to explore one of the most famous venues in world sport in London, with John Donegan from the MCC guiding them around Lord’s.
The tour began with a walk around the Nursery Ground towards the modern media centre. The media centre is where all journalists, be them print, online or broadcast, get to watch and cover the matches from, with a perfect raised view of the playing surface and the ground as a whole from inside the centre.
Following on from the media centre, both groups were then shown the famous Long Room. The Long Room is part of the famous pavilion at Lord’s where players walk through the MCC members to make their way to the pitch. Inside the Long Room stand many portraits of famous cricketers from across the world including Kapil Dev, Brian Lara and Shane Warne.
Our Sudbury Club were then fortunate enough to be taken upstairs to see the dressing rooms at the upper level of the pavilion. Finally both Clubs were given a chance to explore the Lord’s museum which includes a huge range of cricketing memorabilia from the history of the game, including a replica of the Ashes urn.

Enjoying their time at Lord’s
Reflecting on their visit to the historical home of cricket, Andy Read, Club Facilitator at Sudbury, commented: “What a great day we had! We had over 30 of us in attendance and I’ve had some terrific feedback from the members on how much they enjoyed their time exploring Lord’s.
“Everyone was really friendly to us during our visit and we’d love to come back in the future to see a game.”
Kay Kakad, who leads our Croydon Club, also shared her thoughts about her Club’s visit: “It was another memorable tour for our Club members and volunteers who came along, following our trip to Wembley last year.
“Some of our members have a long held passion for cricket, so it was lovely for them to go around Lord’s and view some of the historical things on show. A big thank you to John as well for taking us around!”
