Bringing generations together in Penarth

It always a great joy when we’re able to bring different generations together through the medium of Sporting Memories, and in Wales we were able to host a special gathering when pupils from Cadoxton Primary School joined our Penarth Club members for their weekly session.

Learning about ageism

Cadoxton teacher Rhys Morgan made contact with Sporting Memories Wales earlier this year to ask if we could help his pupils learn about older people in the local community, as part of the school’s work to educate the children on ageism.

Following a series of discussions, some of the pupils from Cadoxton were invited along to the Sporting Memories session held at Penarth Rugby Club. Taking place every Wednesday morning between 10am – 12pm, the group were delighted to welcome the young cohort along to their weekly meeting.

Joining in the usual fun and games

After welcoming the young pupils to the session, it was time for all to have a chat about their favourite sports and experiences, with many Club members and pupils enjoying their chats about football and rugby to name a couple of the sports talked about.

There was also time for some refreshments between chatting and taking part in some sporting activity of their own – with Club members and Cadoxton pupils all taking turns to play Boccia together.

It was a brilliant afternoon for everyone involved and below we’ve included some of the words from the pupils who appeared to have a great time at Sporting Memories!

‘I really enjoyed talking to the people about their favourite sport. I love rugby and Drew (Sporting Memories Penarth Club Member) told me all about rugby in New Zealand’

‘The game of Boccia was so much fun. I want to come and play again. I was happy when we won’

An ‘amazing’ experience

The day wouldn’t have been made possible without the kind support of Penarth Club volunteers Peter and Paul as well as Rhys. The latter reflected on an enjoyable day for his pupils.

“It was amazing to see the children and the members chatting and finding common ground. The children loved the experience and the game of Boccia was a real highlight!” Rhys said.

Rob Baker, Project Coordinator for Sporting Memories Wales, also commented on the session, adding: “It’s great when we can bring the community closer to what we do at Sporting Memories, so it was really nice to be able to welcome the pupils from Cadoxton and Rhys along to the Penarth Club.”

“The members really enjoyed chatting and playing sports games with the pupils and I hope they also learned about older people in the community too.”
