Checking out our new group – Darts legend Trina Gulliver visits Galanos House for launch

We were delighted to see a new Sporting Memories club launch at Royal British Legion’s (RBL) Community Hub and Café, situated next to Galanos House care home, on Wednesday 26 October, with the help from a special guest – 10-time BDO World Darts Champion Trina Gulliver MBE!

Galanos House has been a long-term supporter of Sporting Memories, having hosted sessions with their care home for the past four years, but they have recently opened the RBL Community Hub and Café next to Galanos House, where a new session has been launched, which is open to older people from across the local community.

The launch of the new club in the community Hub saw Trina in attendance, where she took the time to speak with the group and detail her glittering career in the sport as well as sharing some of her trophies including her first BDO World Darts Championship Trophy – where she defeated her compatriot Mandy Solomons in 2001.

The group were inspired by Trina recollection from her time playing competitive darts for nearly 30 years as it enabled the group to reflect on their own memories of the sport as well allow them the confidence to share some of their favourite moments from a wide variety of sports.

Trina revealed one of her most cherished memories to the group was when she was awarded an MBE by King Charles III (then the Prince of Wales) in 2013, for her services to Darts as well as supporting local charitable causes across Warwickshire.

Before the session came to an end, there was time for the group to participate in a game of New Age Kurling with Trina on hand to support everyone playing!

After the session, Beccy Mazurek, from the Royal British Legion, reflected on a positive launch and an open invitation to people from the local community to join the club.

“It was amazing having Trina here with us for our first Sporting Memories meeting. Trina talked to us about her journey of playing competitive darts and told us some brilliant stories and we can’t thank her enough for visiting us.

“This is a new group for us in our fantastic community space which is open to all. We run weekly on Wednesdays between 10.30am – 12.30 pm with the option of a light lunch for £2, so if you love talking about sport and want to make some new friends, we’d very much welcome you along!”
