Christmas joy at our Welsh gathering in Penarth

Our Clubs from across Wales were brought together in the spirit of the festive season for an afternoon of fun and games at our Christmas Get Together in Penarth, supported by MacMillan Cancer Cymru and the GVS Loneliness and Social Isolation Fund.

Over 40 people, including members and volunteers gathered at the Penarth Rugby and Athletics Club for a fun day of activities, including Christmas quizzes, a raffle and nice curry to see out the Sporting Memories year across Wales.

The day began with groups from across Wales uniting at the home of our Penarth Club to enjoy the festivities with a team quiz being the first activity of the day. In a highly competitive quiz session, it was the Merry Men from our Pontypridd Club who were winners – a huge well done to them!

As part of the session, our members and volunteers were asked to get into the festive spirit by either dressing up in a Christmas outfit or as they favourite sports player from either the current or previous eras.

Arthur, a member of our Rumney Hub Club, (pictured above) was chosen as the winner of the best Christmas outfit with his blue festive suit and tie, whilst Peter Owen, a volunteer at our Penarth group was given the accolade as best dressed sports person – having come dressed as his hero Alan Ball.

Finally, there was time for a raffle of prizes to raise fund for Sporting Memories across Wales, thanks to the kind generosity of Tesco Penarth and Tesco Llanelli. The raffle was well supported with £120 raised towards our work in Cymru.

Rob Baker, our Project Co-ordinator in Wales, reflected on a brilliant way to see out the year in Wales.

“A huge thank you to all of our members and volunteers who came along to Penarth for a really fun Christmas event. It was brilliant to see everyone get into the festive spirit with their fancy dress choices as well as the good nature and humour that the session entailed.

“The session wouldn’t have been possible without the kind support of MacMillan Cancer Cymru, GVS and the donations of Tesco’s in Penarth and Llanelli, which all made for a brilliant afternoon.”
