Hit for six – Cricketing star wows Alloa audience

Who would have thought a bunch of die-hard Scottish football fans would have been spellbound by CRICKET!

Yes, cricket: the sport that most Scots deny any knowledge of and would rather go to purgatory than watch a match. However, that stereotype was swiftly changed at our Alloa Club as Conor McKerr made a lasting impression earlier this month when his grandad, Eddie, who is one of the Club members, brought him along.

Conor, cricket and cajoling the Alloa crowd!

Conor, who has recently signed for English County side Nottinghamshire following his departure from Surrey, wowed our Alloa members (even his Grandad) with details of his life and career in Cricket to date.

Arriving in the UK aged 18 with an aspiration to play cricket for England, having represented South Africa at youth level, Conor shared his experiences of playing professionally for the past eight years, including several loan spells away from Surrey, the first club he joined in England in 2016.

From 2016 until today

Conor told the story of his arrival as an 18-year-old in London - almost direct from school in South Africa and how he made a life for himself in this country through his skills as a fast-bowler.

The members were fascinated as he also shared the details of the day-to-day life of an elite level sportsman. He told the Alloa members about all the performance monitoring that goes on, the ongoing injuries and their treatment and management. It was quite an eye-opener on the demands made on sportspeople in the modern world of professional sport.

A proud Grandad

Conor is a delightful young man and that was shown in his nature with the members, showing a great interest in the members’ stories and questions, with his grandfather Eddie being rightly proud of his very talented grandson.

In fact, the members insisted that when he is next up north visiting his grandad that he makes another visit to the club and update everyone on his progress. A young man to watch, that’s for certain!

(BTW it is not hard to sport Conor in the accompanying photo – he’s 6ft 6in tall)
