Into the Olympic Spirit – Fife Clubs enjoy festivals of sport
Whilst most of the world’s eyes have been glued to the Paris Olympics, Fife was experiencing a plethora of Olympic events with over 100 sports men, women and children taking part. Sporting Memories Fife team brought each of the local clubs sessions of activities, food, fun and friendship.
Fife Health & Social Care Partnership had awarded the organisation some funds to enable these days to take place. The aim was to create quality time for families and carers to join their loved ones for some well-deserved time away from the day to day.
East Fife Club
Our East Fife Club, which meets weekly at Bayview Stadium in Methil on Mondays at 2pm, started the week off and road tested some of the challenges the team had created. Indoor Hockey and Quoits were two favourites as well as football. But the team didn’t make the challenges easy at all. Each game, whilst catering to all capabilities, was aimed at allowing participants to use as many muscle groups as possible. A lovely afternoon tea followed the games with time to reflect on the
glories of the day.

Dunfermline Club
Tuesdays at 10.30 is the normal time that our Dunfermline club meets at Abbeyview Bowling Club and Olympics day was no different. The Bowling Club are great friends of Sporting Memories and allowed us to use part of the indoor rink area giving our ‘athletes’ plenty of room to move. With over 40 eager participants it was a very busy day and the teams all put up a strong challenge for the title of Dunfermline Olympians.
The whole club was extra excited to have amongst them taking part in all the games, Sporting Memories very own Olympic and World Champion patron, Yvonne Murray MBE. Yvonne and her husband, Tom Mooney, are great supporters of Sporting Memories and it is always a joy to welcome them. Over lunch Yvonne shared some of her sporting memories and answered many questions from the enthralled audience. Two of our youngest attendees got to try on her Olympic Bronze medal and were thrilled to pieces.
A very successful day and as one member said “My grandson (who was with him) just said that this is great fun Grandad and can we do this again”

Kirkcaldy Club
Kirkcaldy Rugby Club has been host to Sporting Memories in the Lang Toun for some years now every Wednesday at 10.30am and has a very loyal membership all of whom were ‘Game for a Laugh” on Wednesday past. Again, the members were joined by family members and friends who made up six teams of eager players. The ‘Golf’ was a bit of a challenge though as the floor was just a bit uneven so there was much moaning, groaning and cheering from that corner over scores. But the other sporting challenges were met with gusto and team captains were urging the players to greater heights.
Again Yvonne and Tom had made time to come through and join the Kirkcaldy group. An added bonus was that Stuart Hogg, Yvonne’s sprint coach from her running days, also popped along. Between the two of them the after-lunch Q&A was packed with anecdotes and memories. Gosh how athletics and athletes have changed over the years – a revelation.

Charity supporting Charities
On another note, lunch in Kirkcaldy and the following day was provided by the Sunshine Kitchen in Fife and was superb! The Sunshine Kitchen provides volunteer work opportunities for young adults with lifelong neurological conditions. Our young people are involved in all aspects of seasonal food production, from growing produce in their own garden to cooking and baking with it in their kitchen. Regularly attending food markets and community events across Fife, they sell food from their stall, as well as offering catering, and a food delivery service for local cafes.

Glenrothes Club
Our last Games of the week was at Gilvenbank Community Sports Hub in Glenrothes where our club meets every Thursday at 10.30am. Again members brought along family and friends to join the fun. And what a fun bunch they were. Giggles galore all day with both members and guests giving their all in each of the rounds.
The archery with kit provided by the Gilvenbank team was a great hit. The target was fairly safe though. Robin Hood needn’t worry about any competition. Although it was summer we also tried indoor Ice Hockey which turned out to be much harder than it looked.
Another memory filled summer of sport for Sporting Memories. Again, we’d like to thank Fife Health and Social Care Partnership for all their help and support and participation too!
