Marden tee up for Golf masterclass with Jamie Spence

Our Marden Club welcomed former European Tour golfer Jamie Spence to one of their sessions recently as he spoke about his experiences of being a professional sportsperson.

Jamie enjoyed a lengthy career in the sport, starting in 1985 and spanning over many decades including three professional tour titles during that time, most notably the 2000 Moroccan Open.

Jamie joined our members having been introduced to the Marden Club by recent guest Faye Hackwell, from BBC Radio Kent. During his time with the Club members, Jamie spoke about his journey into golf as a youngster before turning pro, and then his career in the sport. After his decision to end his playing days, he became Chairman of the European Tour’s Tournament Committee and explained to everyone in attendance his responsibilities in that role.

Jamie was also involved in the return of Golf at the Olympics, where he was captain of Team GB. It turned out to be a very successful captaincy as GB earned Gold in the Men’s category thanks to Justin Rose.

Jamie was also kind enough to bring in some of the memorabilia and trophies he won during his time on the tour, with members keen to take a closer look at some of the items Jamie had shared with the group.

Following a detailed discussion, it was time for the usual physical activity part of the Marden Club’s Sporting Memories session, and of course the theme for the activity had to be golf!

With Jamie on hand to join in, members and volunteers alike all got stuck into a game of indoor golf, with a ‘chip off’ taking place. Some of the members showed some fine skills to impress Jamie during his time at the club.

Speaking after the session, Sue Eltringham, Marden Club Facilitator, was delighted to welcome another guest to their session: “It was great to welcome Jamie along to the recent Sporting Memories Club meeting, especially following on from Faye’s visit a few weeks ago.”

“Jamie was brilliant with everyone in attendance and took his time to chat and share his experiences which I believe was really well received.”

Our Marden Club runs every Tuesday between 2:30pm to 4pm. For further information, please contact mardensportingmemories@gmail.com
