Pat Nevin visits Dunbar Sporting Memories

Our Sporting Memories Club at Dunbar welcomed a special guest recently when Pat Nevin dropped in for a chat.

Pat made his way to one of our clubs after a member of the Dunbar club, who doesn’t live too far away from the former Chelsea winger, casually asked if he could take some time to visit the group - and before you could say “Goal” he was with us!

Pat entertained a big crowd for the session, with over 25 members and guests in attendance listening intently as he shared memories of which there were enough to fill several books.

Pat is probably best remembered as a Scottish international gathering 28 caps over 10 years but south of the border his career at Stamford Bridge playing for Chelsea was one of great distinction and earned him an everlasting place in the hearts of fans. Indeed, he still writes a weekly column for Chelsea offering insights and analysis - It’s a good read. He also played for Clyde, Kilmarnock and Motherwell in Scotland and Everton and Tranmere Rovers in England before retiring in 2000 after nearly 20 years of top-flight football.

The other Pat Nevin

Pat, however, is a man of many talents and you may best know him today for his football punditry on TV and Radio. He also keeps physically active and is still a keen long distance runner continuing to demonstrate the pace and agility he was known for on the pitch.

However, did you know that Pat has also been known to spin the decks with indiepop tunes being his preferred choice? He has guest DJ’d at clubs and events – let us know if you have seen Pat in action!

All in all though, Pat was a wonderful guest speaker and kept the room engaged for almost the whole meeting and was happy to take all questions which he answered without any pretension.

The day was summed up by Graham Cross, who looks after our East Lothian clubs, who briefly reflected saying: “What a guy. He’s an inspiration to us all - and fun too!”

Our Dunbar group meets weekly at Hallhill Sports Centre on a Thursday 10.30 – 12 noon. If that’s suitable, we also have a weekly club on a Tuesday at 1.30pm - 3pm in North Berwick which meets at North Berwick Rugby Club. Contact graham.cross@sportingmemories.uk if you want more information
