Penarth club enjoy insights into the football industry

Our Penarth club welcomed Ian Gwyn Hughes, Head of Public Relations at the Football Association of Wales (FAW), to their session last week (18th October) where Ian spoke about his extensive career in the football and media industry.

Joined by an audience of 25 members at Penarth Rugby Club, Ian began by detailing his career as a sports broadcaster for the BBC, working on a number of football-related shows including Match of The Day.

Ian brought things closer to home when he discussed his current role at the FAW, supporting a number of aspects of Welsh football including the men’s national football team. With the recent success of the team making several tournaments including the World Cup last year, Ian shared how he worked on the ‘Together Stronger’ slogan within the FAW to bring the nation develop a closer connection with the national team. Ian also reflected on how recent success and the tournament has helped to bring the pride and passion out of the players representing their country.

The members were enthralled with Ian’s time with the club sharing his insights into the media and how football interacts with the public through the medium of the media.

After Ian had concluded his time speaking to the members, it was then back to the regular activities of the club session the club quiz – but this session’s quiz had a specially Welsh football theme – which saw members get into a competitive spirit as they tried to claim the win!

Once the session had come to an end, Rob Baker, reflected on Ian’s visit: “We’ve had a series of great guests come along to our Penarth club recently and Ian was no exception to that.

“He shared some brilliant stories and insight into his career in football and a lot of the members commented after how much they enjoyed Ian speaking. He would definitely be welcomed back to visit anytime.”
