Sporting Memories announce apprenticeships for new project in Essex
Sporting Memories is delighted to announce that four apprenticeships to support three new Clubs and one of our current Clubs in Essex have opened for applications, thanks to funding from Sport England’s Pilot Fund.
The exciting new project will create a workforce development pathway for four young people across the county and provide the chance for the chosen candidates to learn more about the role of sport and physical activity in local communities.
They will be on hand to support with three new weekly Sporting Memories Community Clubs within three leisure centres in Canvey Island, Chelmsford and South Benfleet respectively, alongside one current Club which is situated within Witham Leisure Centre. Alongside the Clubs, the apprentices will also support Sporting Memories activities in local care homes.
The multi-generational project will aim to create meaningful two-way connections between the care homes and the leisure centre-based community Clubs through the apprentices.
The apprentices will also work alongside Sporting Memories volunteers at the new Clubs, giving volunteers the platform to successfully run the Clubs on a weekly basis. This will ensure that Clubs are sustainable through volunteer-led delivery and greater enhance our support to volunteers a localised level.
Sporting Memories will be working in partnership with Sport for Confidence, Lifetime Training, Coach Core, Castle Point Borough Council, Fusion Leisure, Chelmsford City Council and Essex County Council.
Jake Turner, Operations Director of Sport for Confidence, is excited to be part of the new project and host one of the apprenticeships.
“This is a great collaboration of partners looking to help tackle physical inactivity and health inequalities, with a new approach utilising apprenticeships. We are looking forward to working with a range of partners with different skills and experiences that will strengthen the project and see real impact for older people in Essex.”
Chris Wilkins, Co-Founder and CEO of Sporting Memories, believes the project can be the start of impactful multi-generational work across the home nations.
“Our multi-generational partnership project will support frailer older people through meaningful sporting reminiscence, social and physical activities designed to improve mental and physical well-being, reduce loneliness and isolation and to connect them to wider health and social networks.
“We hope to take the learning from the project to expand the apprenticeship model across the UK.”
