Sudbury recognise National Fitness Day with special session

Our Sudbury Sporting Memories Club had a session to remember at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre as they recognised National Fitness Day through a range of activities.

National Fitness Day for 2024 was held on Wednesday 18 September and as that fell on the week-day when our Sudbury Club gather, it was a perfect theme for their session. The day focuses on showing the importance of an active lifestyle to maintain positive physical and mental wellbeing, regardless of age or ability.

Working out to begin

The session began with an inclusive workout activity for all the members. Led by Ellen, one of the fitness instructors at Kingfisher Leisure Centre, members were given the opportunity to participate in the activity either sitting down or standing up, where they followed a smooth routine accompanied by music.

The members showed great enthusiasm and energy as they got stuck into the exercises shown by Ellen before they were all given the opportunity to relax and take in the next part of the session.

Finding out more about keeping fit through special guests

The session then welcomed some guests in the form of the Mayor of Sudbury, Alison Owen, and Abbeycroft Leisure’s Health and Wellbeing Ambassador Jan Osborne.

Both Alison and Jan spoke in great detail and passion to the members about the importance of fitness in later life, and how it can be a vital method in preventing and decreasing the impact of long-term health challenges.

The special guest for the session which members could take some inspiration from was Lesley Linden, a duathlete and triathlete who has competed for Great Britain internationally in her age group.

Lesley spoke to the members about entering her first sprint duathlon in 2014 aged 56 and has since represented her nation in the Duathlon European Championships, most recently at the 2022 Sprint Duathlon World Championships in Romania, finishing ninth in her age group.

Reflections from Andy

It was a great session for everyone in attendance and Andy Read, Sporting Memories Ambassador and Club Facilitator commented: “It was great to do something for National Fitness Day during our usual Wednesday gathering, and I think a lot of the members really enjoyed both aspects of the day. A huge thank you to everyone who came along and was a part of it.”

Our Sudbury Sporting Memories Club runs every Wednesday at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury from 2:15pm to 3:45pm. For further information, contact Sudbury sudburysportingmemories@gmail.com
