Visiting a world of Subbuteo - Marden Club visit exhibition in Tunbridge Wells!

The Marden Sporting Memories Club made the short trip across Kent to Tunbridge Wells on Tuesday (1 October) to visit the Subbuteo exhibition at the Amelia Scott Centre – which recently hosted the Subbuteo World Cup!

The Oh! Oh! Oh! Subbuteo! exhibition recently opened to the public, inviting visitors to explore a rich collection of memorabilia and interactive displays that bring the excitement of Subbuteo to life.

Our Marden Club members and volunteers were invited along to the Amelia Scott Centre to discover the world of Subbuteo again, which brought back many memories for the group of playing the football-based game as children. Some of the members also revealed that they are part of a local Subbuteo league which takes place in Marden!

Enjoying the immersive world of Subbuteo

There were many interactive and immersive parts of the exhibition which caught the attention of our members as they explored the venue. With Subbuteo’s origins in the county, there were audio clips from workers who created the sets in the 20th century, along with tales from Peter Adolph, the inventor of Subbuteo.

Alongside this were many images and photos from across the years of Subbuteo being played and also some very unique sets, including rugby, cricket and even a Subbuteo Beatles Set. There was also the opportunity for members to put their Subbuteo skills to the test with a game set out on table in the venue.

Following their tour of the exhibition, there was a quick coffee break where members could chat about what they had seen before they got on their coach back to Marden.

Reflections on the Subbuteo exhibition

Reflecting on their visit, Sue Eltringham, Club Facilitator of the Marden Sporting Memories Club, said: “The group had a very enjoyable day at the Subbuteo exhibition, which brought up loads of memories from their childhoods, and in some cases, they have recent memories as they play locally now!

“The exhibition gave our group a chance to play and look back at some of the iconic sets and activities connected with Subbuteo which certainly raised a lot of talking points as they went around. It was a great ‘away-day’ for everyone involved at the Sporting Memories Club.

“We’re also extremely grateful to The Marden Community Charitable Incorporated Organisation, who kindly supported our travel requirements which enabled our members to visit the exhibition.”

The Oh! Oh! Oh! Subbuteo! Exhibition is opening to the public from now until Sunday 5 January 2025, at The Amelia Scott in Tunbridge Wells! For further information visit https://theamelia.co.uk/whats-on/oh-oh-oh-subbuteo
