Alex takes one for the team at the Fife Volunteer Awards 2025

A very exciting night in Fife on Tuesday 3 June during Volunteers Week 2025 as Fife Voluntary Action held their annual awards evening. Sporting Memories in Fife were delighted to see one of their volunteers, Alex Kilgour, win Active Volunteer of the Year.

For all my fellow volunteers

Nobody was more shocked and delighted than Alex when he heard his name announced but when he returned to the table the first words he said were: “But it is not me who deserves this, it’s all my fellow volunteers in Fife. We are a team, a tremendous group of dedicated volunteers, so this is for everyone”

What made Alex stand out in the judges’ opinion was that he used his own physiotherapy journey experiences after suffering a near fatal brain haemorrhage to bring a fresh slant to exercises and activities to members at the Kirkcaldy and East Fife Clubs.

To us, Alex is also a testament to resilience with his determination to get back to as normal a life as possible as quickly as possible. He’s also a fund of incredible tales of sporting Derring-Do with more than a dash of infectious humour thrown in.

Top Venue

We had another reason to celebrate last night when the team at Gilvenbank Community Sports Hub picked up the Active Organisation in Fife Award. We host a Sporting Memories Club at the Hub in Glenrothes on a Thursday, with the team there going above and beyond to help support our sessions as well as the countless other groups they help all year round. This was so well deserved and received so it was a privilege to be there to cheer them on.

Thank you

The Fife Voluntary Action team put on a splendid event each year which is wonderful to be part of. So many volunteers in one room, all there because they go above and beyond just like our own volunteers at Sporting Memories. Thank you for all you do.
