Sudbury Club cheer on the Tour of Britain

Our Sudbury Club had a sporting day to remember on Tuesday 2 September, as they were invited by local councils to be part of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Village in nearby Southwold.

The Tour of Britain is a men’s professional cycling event which has been run since 1945 under many guises, such as the Milk Race and Kellogs Tour, and see competitors cycle across the UK in a number of stages.

As part of this year’s event, the opening two stages of the tour are taking place in Suffolk, with our Sudbury Club invited by Suffolk Council to be part of several community groups that formed the tour’s village at the end of stage one in Southwood.

A day to remember

Members and volunteers from our Sudbury Club enjoyed a brilliant day in the tour village, proudly displaying the Sporting Memories banner at their stall and speaking to people about the Club and what it does every Wednesday.

This also included meeting some of the biggest names in cycling, including Tour De France winner Geraint Thomas, by the Ineos Grenadiers team coach. They also had the chance to meet ITV Cycling presenter and commentator Ned Boulting, who stopped by the Sporting Memories stall to have a good chat and provide his support to the sessions they run.

Overall, it was a brilliant day for our group in attendance and they wrapped up their day by getting to watch the action on the road as the competitors cycled towards the finish line in Southwood.

Following on

The day after visiting the tour (Wednesday 3 September), the tour came to Sudbury, with all of our Club’s members and volunteers having the opportunity to glimpse the second stage, as it made it’s way around the edge of Sudbury.

Andy Read, the Club’s facilitator, said: “It has been a special couple of days being a part of the Tour of Britain, and we’re grateful to East Suffolk, Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils, who kindly invited us along to be part of this sporting event.

“It’s days like these that Sporting Memories are made and it was great to see so many of our members and volunteers enjoy the Tour coming through Sudbury as well as supporting our efforts in the Tour village too.”

It was wonderful to link up with Andy again. Peter Berry (living with Alzheimer's) and I met Andy at a sporting memories talk in Sudbury in 2023 and we have retained that link. I will overlook the far from flattering photo of me on this occasion! What's worked really well about meeting Andy is that networks have developed in Suffolk and we are mutually supportive of each others' roles and objectives. Apart from Andy's dodgy choice of football teams, I see this relationship as being really positive!
