Our team share their sporting highlights of the year

Once again, it’s been another fantastic year of sport, with wonderful action and drama along the way which will be in the memory of the sporting public for a long time after this year ends.

So with that in mind, we asked our brilliant team of staff and Patrons for their thoughts on the 2023 sporting action (and Sporting Memories) they seen or been a part of and they’ve shared their personal stories below.

Donna – Partnerships Manager in Scotland

“As a football fan, 2023 was all about Scotland qualifying for Euro 2024 in Germany.

“We played brilliantly, had some great results with the last minute winner away in Norway a particular high point!”

Gary – one of our Community Club Coordinators in Scotland

“My highlight has to be firstly seeing Team Mouat winning the World Curling Championships and retaining the European Curling Championships. If that doesn’t make them BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year - then they will have been robbed!

“Also, Josh Kerr winning the World 1500m World Championship was another highlight!”

Kayleigh – Development Manager in England

“I have a few highlights from this year that I could choose as a favourite!

“I ran Bamburgh 10k in June – the first decent run I’ve done since I had my first child! Also Newcastle United making it to the Carabao Cup Final and seeing how happy my husband was to get to see them play at Wembley.

“From a Sporting Memories perspective, -Catching up with our Sporting Memories MaeCare Club in Leeds in the summer was lovely too.”

Janet – our Communications Officer

“For me, a massive highlight was hosting our event for Scottish Women’s and Girls Week!

It was a brilliant event with many interesting conversations had about how we can encourage more women to be part of our Clubs. That has led me to look forward to 2024 when we might achieve our goal of a women's focused Sporting Memories Club.”

Tom – our Communications Manager

“It’s been another brilliant sporting year, but the highlight for me was seeing my team Leyton Orient winning the League Two title!”

Rob – our Project Co-oordinator for Wales

“My personal sporting highlight was getting to play senior football with both my sons for the first time this season I can now hang my boots up a happy man!”

“Here’s a picture with me and my boys Ben and Harri.”

Brian - our Development Director in Scotland

"I am not the biggest athletics fan but a real highlight for me was Josh Kerr winning the 1500m world championships in Budapest. The race was so exciting and a slight personal interest was that I was familiar with his dad when we both played rugby about the same time many years ago.”

Kelly - our Director of Impact and Fundraising

"My moment of this year was walking over 100,000 steps in Northumberland for the first time, including wandering along Hadrian's Wall and seeing the Sycamore Gap tree before it was felled!"

A big thank you to the team for sharing their sporting highlights of 2023. If you have any memories you’d like to share, why not add yours in the comment section below!
