A sporting life told in Penarth
When our Sporting Memories Clubs welcome guests to their sessions they usually have experience within one sporting field, but in the recent session at our Penarth Club, they met a man who has a plethora of experience across many sports!
Peter Boshier Jones joined our Penarth Club for one of their sessions in October to regale the members with his sporting memories which stretch over several decades.
Peter is currently a member of the local tennis club in Penarth and agreed to pop in to the session at Penarth Rugby and Athletics Club give the Club a talk about his sporting career, which started all the way back in the 1960s.
Peter’s early days
Peter began by detailing his early venture into sport through a love of horses whilst in the RAF, which eventually saw him compete in some equestrian competitions, where he competed against many great riders, including World and European champion David Broome.
Following his time in the RAF, Peter then moved onto outlining his career as a motorsport driver, specialising in the sport of hill climbing. Peter had great success in hill climbing, including winning the British championship in the 1960s.
Still a champion in later years
Peter has always had a passion for playing sport and in later years has been involved with playing seniors tennis at a competitive level.
And during his chat, Peter finished off by telling the group about his time playing tennis for Team GB and winning the Wimbledon Championship in the over 80s category in 2022.
Showing some memorabilia from a lifetime of sport
The members were enthralled with Peter’s tales and triumphs of his time being involved in several sports throughout his lifetime. And there was also the opportunity for members to view some of Peter’s memorabilia which he brought to the session, including the helmet and goggles he wore to race and many photos of his days behind the wheel, which you can view in this article.
From everyone at the Penarth Club and from Sporting Memories Wales, it’s a huge thank you to Peter for visiting and making it a memorable session!
