Recognising Lachie with track named in his honour

The late Lachie Stewart, who famously won Gold in the 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh in 1970, and was also one of our Patrons, has been posthumously honoured by the renaming of a newly built athletics track at Posties Park in Dumbarton.

Lachie is a Scottish athletics legend, having competed for Scotland and Great Britain across middle and long-distance races throughout his running career during the 1960s and 1970s, including at major international events such as the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

In recent years, Lachie supported our work here at Sporting Memories, joining us in the summer of 2022 for a special Commonwealth Games online event, where he shared his recollections of sealing a joyous home gold.

Renaming Posties Park

In a ceremony last month, West Dunbartonshire Council announced that Posties Park Athletics Track in Dumbarton, situated by the River Leven, was to be renamed the Lachie Stewart Memorial Park.

This was agreed by the council following a motion by Councillor David McBride, initially raised by our Scottish Trustee Maurice Donohue, to remember Lachie as well as inspire upcoming generations of athletes who train and compete at the venue.

Maurice added his thoughts on the renaming of the track in Lachie’s honour.

“I felt it was important to recognise the major impact Lachie had on Scottish athletics during his time competing as well as his many years coaching and supporting future generations.

“Lachie was also brilliant in his support for Sporting Memories later in his life, and we were grateful when he joined us a few years ago to share his experiences of competing in a home games as well as his career in distance running.

“To help advocate for the renaming of the track in Lachie’s honour has been important for me and I’d like to thank West Dunbartonshire Council for their support.”

A brilliant tribute to our Patron Lachie - a huge well done to Maurice and everyone at West Dunbartonshire Council.
