Scarlets welcome Gareth Jenkins as first guest speaker
In October, our recently formed club with Scarlets Rugby welcomed their first ever guest speaker in the form of legendary coach Gareth Jenkins.
Gareth has been involved in rugby union across Llanelli for over 50 years, having played for Llanelli Rugby and coached at the club for 24 years, before coaching at the Scarlets and the Welsh national rugby team during the early 2000s.
Gareth visited the Sporting Memories club to share anecdotes and tales from his time in the sport, where he shared details of being part of the Llanelli sides which defeated touring New Zealand and Australian sides in the 1970s as a player and in the 1990s as a coach.
The audience of Club members were deeply engaged with Gareth as he also shared details of his time in the coaching set-up of the British and Irish Lions, during their tour of New Zealand in 2005, before going on to become the Head Coach of Wales between 2006 – 2007.
It was a fascinating session with Rob Lloyd, Media and Communications Manager at Scarlets Rugby, commenting: “It was brilliant to listen to Gareth’s stories of his playing and coaching days, from the famous win over the All Blacks at Stradey Park in 1972 to the day trips to Cardiff for Welsh Cup finals.
“Gareth is someone who has achieved so much in the game, more than 900 matches as coach of the Scarlets, head coach of Wales and assistant coach to the British & Irish Lions. It was amazing for the group to get an insight into rugby, both in the amateur and professional eras from someone who has been there at the top end for so long.”
Rob also was delighted to see how the Sporting Memories club has started life in Llanelli and encouraged anyone interested to pop along to the free session, held every Wednesday at the Parc Y Scarlets café at 11am.
“It was also great to see so many new faces coming along. The group continues to go from strength to strength and we look forward to welcoming more fans favourites to Parc y Scarlets over the coming weeks and months.”
