The Haileybury Society donate £1000 to Sporting Memories in memory of Peter Ellis

Sporting Memories has accepted a generous donation made by members of the Haileybury Society, the wider cricketing community on behalf of the family and friends of Peter Ellis, who sadly passed away in June this year at the age of 89.

Peter was a highly respected cricket and rackets coach at Haileybury College, where he served the college to great acclaim between 1964 and 1996 whilst also making a significant impact outside of Haileybury in the local community surrounding the college in Hertford and Hoddesdon.

Peter had a life-long passion for cricket which took him through a playing career in England and Scotland as well as embarking on playing other sports in the winter including Squash and Rackets. This enabled him to become a respected coach during his long career at Haileybury College. He also encouraged sport within his family with his son Richard, who attended Haileybury, playing competitive Cricket with our Patron Alastair Hignell, at Gloucestershire CCC.

Following his passing earlier this year, Peter’s family chose to raise funds for two charities in Peter’s memory and approached the Society to facilitate a joint appeal. They chose Sporting Memories alongside the Professional Cricketers’ Trust and following online giving and a retiring collection at Peter’s memorial service in the Haileybury Chapel, both charities received £1000 each.

Following the donation, Chris Wilkins, CEO of Sporting Memories, reflected “It is with deep appreciation and respect that we accept this donation in memory of the life of Peter Ellis. Donations, such as this, are invaluable to us as a small charity and the money will go towards us helping isolated older sports fans and former players living with long-term conditions in the community through a common love of sport.”

Jane Everard, Secretary of The Haileybury Society, said “It has been a privilege to help facilitate this important appeal on behalf of Peter and his family and to work closely with Sporting Memories and the Professional Cricketers’ Trust. Peter played a significant role in the life of Haileybury for over three decades and was hugely respected by pupils and colleagues alike. He was a lifetime member of the Society and a shining example of our ethos of spirit of service throughout his long career and in retirement.”
