Walking the extra mile for Sporting Memories

On Wednesday 27 May, Dunbar Club member Calum Fairbairn will begin an incredible 10-day fundraising challenge where he will walk over 15 miles a day and camp out across Scottish countryside to raise funds for Sporting Memories.
Calum has been a regular at our Dunbar Sporting Memories Club in East Lothian, Scotland. His journey with us started after he saw an article online about whales stranded on Thorntonloch Sands, and knowing he had some photos about that no one else may have seen, so he ventured along to our sessions to show the Club volunteer at the time, Iby Robertson.
On arrival he spotted Club members who he knew from going to the pub. After staying and enjoying the session Calum decided to become a member and joins the sessions when he is not working, getting stuck into the quizzes and chatting to old and new friends about sport.
He sees the difference the Club makes to its members, as he said reflected with us: “For a couple of hours people are smiling and laughing and enjoying each other’s friendship and company - This is why I wanted to raise funds for the charity.”
Idea for fundraising
A year ago Calum mentioned the fundraising idea to Iby and has been planning ever since. With Iby’s recent passing Calum is heartbroken that he will not be around to see how much is raised. His fellow members at Dunbar Sporting Memories Club are right behind Calum and will be watching his progress over the 10 days.
Calum loved walking in his younger days and over the past decade has started to walk again for leisure with more recently enjoying longer walks. He has planned a number of different routes but stated that: “The Scottish weather is very variable, so I will decide which route to walk a few days before I start!”
Everyone at Sporting Memories is so proud of Calum and wish him the very best with his fundraising challenge (and that the weather is good!)
